A lot of things happened that year … I got in my first fight (which I lost by a landslide)

The year was 1994, I was 11 years old and in the 6th grade. A lot of things happened that year; I kissed a girl for the first time, I got in my first fight (which I lost by a landslide), but more importantly, I began to discover that there was more to music then what played on KISS 108. With 1994, America’s disaffected youth mourned the loss of Kurt Cobain, welcomed the return of Woodstock (albeit a pale version when compared to the spectacle of 1969… HENDRIX!), and the mainstream welcomed Green Day with open arms. However, I digress; on to the band that this article is about, (get to the point Josh)…The Offspring. Although Nirvana respectably left their mark, and Green Day had their moment; The Offspring still seem to be one of those bands that I don’t skip over when they play on my Pandora radio.

Wrapping up kilScene’s Desert Island Punk Month featuring the bands from The Offspring’s Summer Nationals Tour, I give to you The Offspring’s masterpiece, Smash. I love the album’s signature opening narrator stating, “Ahhh, time to relax“, just as much as I did when I first heard it 20 years ago. There’s no wonder this album catapulted them into the national spotlight and caused all the major labels in the mid-90’s into a scramble to sign punk bands. It was the first album Epitaph records put out to reach bold gold and platinum status, selling over 20 million albums worldwide. The album released three singles: “Come Out and Play“, “Self Esteem” and “Gotta Get Away“; but, as most of us know, every single track on the album could be considered singles. For you youngsters out there reading this, go listen to this album.

All thirteen songs were written by lead singer Dexter Holland, a man who was his high school valedictorian and has his doctorate in Molecular Biology. This man can literally cure cancer and write good punk music. He makes me feel as though I could have tried a little harder in my studies. Dexter, along with band mates Noodles, Greg K., and Ron Welty composed an album that will always be remembered not only by the 90’s generation, but for generations to come. Smash never disappoints. From start to finish, Smash is a punk rock masterpiece of gargantuan proportions. Don’t forget to buy your tickets to the band’s Summer Nationals Tour marking the twentieth anniversary of this groundbreaking album where they’ll play it in its entirety.
