311 took The Cure’s “Lovesong“… and gave it new life, 311 style.

Now who doesn’t love The Cure? Even those people who say that they can’t stand The Cure, can more often than not, groove out to one of their tunes, if, let’s say a song of theirs were to randomly come on the radio. The Cure is the band that many people can agree to agree on. In 2004, reggae/alternative outfit, 311 took The Cure’s “Lovesong“, from the band’s 1989 album Disintergration, and gave it new life, 311 style. 311’s vocalist/guitarist, Nick Hexum belted out a beautiful vocal to 311’s take on the song. 311’s version of “Lovesong” is really quite dreamy.

… 311 would come along and add something bright and shiny to the song?

Think about this. Before we heard 311’s version of “Lovesong“, who ever thought that some band like 311 would come along and add something bright and shiny to the song? I, for one didn’t think that something like that was possible with a Cure song and then 50 First Dates happened. I used to be a sucker for Adam Sandler movies.

I wasn’t terribly impressed with much of it, but that song …

From the mid-ninties to mid-2000’s, Adam could do no wrong in my eyes. 50 First Dates was no different. Funny enough though, the only two things I could remember from that movie is Hank Azaria’s speedo-clad self and 311’s version of “Lovesong“. I remember the plotline of the film, sure, but I wasn’t terribly impressed with much of it, but that song … It was so catchy and just the perfect marriage of 311’s flavor when meshed with a Cure song like “Lovesong“. It worked all around (311 also included “Lovesong” on their greatest hits record which was also released in 2004.)

like an onion, they exposed another layer to the song that we didn’t know existed.

It’s been 10 years since 311’s “Lovesong“, and if I could be honest (and I always am), I was stumped as to which cover song to feature today and I had all but forgotten about 311’s “Lovesong“. Whenever I get stumped on something, I turn to the next best music-knowledgeable person I know. My bro. So this entry is because of him and you know what? It’s worked out because by his suggesting “Lovesong“, he’s also reminded me about the two groups that I had sort of put on the backburner for sometime, so it was nice to revisit not just with 311’s “Lovesong“, but with 311’s music in general, and by extension, The Cure. It’s been a while since I listened to a CD of mine since everything is pretty much on my iPod, so it was nice to dust off Disintergration and listen to The Cure in all their gothy glory. I could listen to The Cure’s version of “Lovesong” and still get down with it (I mean, how could I not? It’s the originator), but if I were Robert Smith, I’d be more than honored to have one of my songs covered, especially if the utmost respect was paid to the original. 311 took “Lovesong“, and, like an onion, they exposed another layer to the song that we didn’t know existed. That’s the best way to look at every cover song, really. If it’s done right, it just shows that there was more to the song than was originally put on wax and 311 peeled that onion just fine.
