QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE • …LIKE CLOCKWORK

4 Comments rock

New album, familiar new sound. I know, I know I just contradicted myself.
New? Yes. “…Like Clockwork” is a new album for Queens of the Stone Age but also a new sound for them as well. It’s a sound I fell in love with the moment that raunchy tube overdriven guitar and driving drum beat hit my eardrums on “Keep Your Eyes Peeled“.
But also familiar in a weird way. It struck a chord with my rock upbringings and my emotional dark side. The use of stripped down power chords with simple rhythmic patterns that any musician would be jealous of and hate themselves for not coming up with them in the first place. It is simple, yet masterful. The dynamics and mood shifts within the tracks themselves serve as an intricate dialog between good and evil, or more like a carefully choreographed battle of the senses.

Its not an album comprised of hit tracks but it’s a hit album you can immmerse your brain in

Its not an album comprised of hit tracks but it’s a hit album you can immerse your brain in. The artwork on the cover is a clear indicator of a darker theme enveloping the album but also of the simplicity in it.The artwork also seems to be borrowing elements from their previous music video for “Go With The Flow“, off of the Queens’ 2003 album, Songs For The Deaf, but pulling back on the production value for their new music video “My God Is The Sun” in the same way that they stripped their sound back to its key components.

Also evident of the overall theme oriented album and its soundtrack-like nature, is the mini film they released that includes the recent single and snippets of many of their other
tracks from “…Like Clockwork”

In the new album there are appearances from Dave Grohl who seems to have built a close relationship with the band since thumping on the drums for Songs For The Deaf and other surprising guests musicians like Mark Lanegan, Trent Reznor, Jake Shears and Mr. “Tiny Dancer” himself, Elton John. NICE!!!

Well don’t take my word for it, take a listen for yourselves and immerse your senses to the serenading composition that is “…Like Clockwork“.
